Men's Basketball Falls To Bryn Athyn, 80-75

Box Score ABINGTON, Pa. - The Penn State Abington men's basketball squad could not contain Bryn Athyn's strong shooting from beyond the arc, which ultimately hurt the Nittany Lions as they dropped an 80-75 decision Wednesday night, snapping the four-game winning streak.

Bryn Athyn looked strong early, shooting 59.3 percent (16-of-27) from the floor in the first half, hitting six bombers from beyond the arc, en route to claming a 45-41 halftime lead. Abington jumped ahead with a 10-5 lead four minutes into the game and held on to the lead for the next 12 minutes but Bryn Athyn kept staying on the heels, trailing no more than three points. The fouls began to pile up against Abington as Bryn Athyn finally took its first lead of the game on a pair of free throws from Christian Riveria at the 4:39 mark.

Bryn Athyn pushed ahead with an eight point lead, thanks to a layup from Troy Steed, followed by a three-point and a layup from Joesph Kehoe. With just under a minute to play in the first stanza, Abington managed to cut the deficit to just four points with a pair of baskets from Avery Barnes and Max Alton as Abington trailed 45-41 at the half.

The second half started with a tip-in by Mike Marvin but Bryn Athyn responded quickly with back-to-back threes by Jeff Seigafuse and Kehoe to extend the Black and White's lead to eight with 18:15 to play. Abington kept in contention midway through the stanza, until Barnes connected with Max Alton, who then delievered the bomb from beyond the arc to tie up the game at 71 points apiece with 3:09 remaining.

A turnover by Bryn Athyn allowed Abington to produce a three point lead as Barnes posted a layup in the paint and was fouled to follow up with a basket at the stripe. The lead did not last long for the Blue and White as Bryn Athyn quickly changed the tempo by Steed hit both of his free throws before going for a pair of layups to give Bryn Athyn a three point lead.

With just 40 seconds remaining, Abington attempted the comeback, starting with Nisiar Smith hitting one of the the two shots from the stripe before Bryn Athyn called timeout, hoping to ice the Nittany Lions' rally. After the break, Bryn Athyn kept the ball in motion before Seigafuse fed it to Kehoe to nail a three-pointer to make it 80-75 Bryn Athyn with six seconds on the clock.

Abington  immediately called timeout, hoping to create a quick play and started inbound with two seconds remaining as Smith pulled the trigger from the arc only to watch the ball clang the rim as time expired.

The loss drops Abington to 8-5 overall, while Bryn Athyn improves to 8-10 on the year.

Barnes scored a game-high 19 points and pulled in 11 rebounds to record his sixth double-doubles on the year. Marvin posted 18 points and eight rebounds, while Smith tallied 13 points with four steals and assists each. Devin Jones was the fourth player to score in double digits tonight as he scored 10 points.

Steed and Seigafuse both scored 18 points for Bryn Athyn as Kehoe shot 5-of-7 from the floor, hitting four three-pointers to finish with 14 points for the Lions.

Abington will look to rebound to its winning ways as the Nittany Lions hit the road to New York this weekend for a pair of NEAC conference games. The first matchup will be against SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday, Janurary 25 for a 1 p.m. tip-off followed by 12 p.m. matchup against SUNYIT the following day.
