Box Score ABINGTON, Pa. – The men's basketball team 2013-14 season came to a close after falling short to Marymount College, 74-65 in the first round of the ECAC Southeast Region Tournament Wednesday night.
The game was a back and forth affair with junior forwards
Mike Marvin and
Avery Barnes leading the way with 15 points each. Barnes was not only dominant on the boards but he also put on a defensive showcase with 11 total rebounds, two blocks and a steal. Marvin was magnificent on offense, shooting 70% from the field along with a pair of assists to end his career as the all-time career leader in scoring, rebounds and double-doubles in program history.
With 4:09 remaining in the game, Abington was down by three until Marvin hit a jumper to cut the deficit to one. Unfortunately, Scott Reed of Marymount College hit a crucial jumper on the next possession, followed by a three-pointer by Jesse Konadu to give the Saints a six point lead as Marymount pulled away from that point on and Abington was unable to recover in time as time expired.
Marymount dominated in almost every major category including points in the paint where the team scored 32 points compared to Penn State Abington 16 points. There bench was also key as they scored 25 points while Penn State Abington only mustered 12 points. Penn State Abington was able to log in more fast break points than Marymount but that was not enough to stop their opposition.
The loss marks the end the 2013-14 season as the Nittany Lions finished 14-13 overall and 11-7 in the conference, earning a playoff spot for its fifth straight season. The team will return with eight players next year and will look to add additional incoming recruits to become even more dominant at the basket.
