ABINGTON, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's tennis team remained undefeated in the North Eastern Athletic Conference at 4-0 and improved to 8-5 overall with an 8-1 conference victory over Lancaster Bible College Thursday afternoon.
Abington swept the three doubles flights and then took five of the six singles points.
Victories came from
Honora Hegarty and
Sheena Philip at No. 1 Singles with an 8-1 decision as
Taylor Zisholtz partnered with
Janie Saile at No. 2 Singles as
Olya Popili and
Alexandra Murianka teamed up at No. 3 Singles for the 8-0 victory each.
Hegarty, Popili, and Philip each needed a third set to defeated their opponents at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 4 flights, respectively. Hegarty dropped the first set before recovering in the next two with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 decision, while Popili battled from the get go, rebounding in the next two in a tight 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 contest. Philip struggled right into the first set before finding her second win to force a third set easily and picking up the 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 win for the point.
Zisholtz utilized the 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3 Singles to close out the team victory as
Christiana Pereira clinched the No. 6 flight with an 8-4 victory.
Abington will now turn its attention to a Friday conference match as the Nittany Lions look to keep the winning streak going as they host Keuka College (5-3, 3-1 NEAC) tomorrow at 12 p.m.
