ABINGTON, Pa. - The Penn State Abington women's tennis team remained undefeated for the season after an 8-1 win over Cairn University Wednesday afternoon.
Abington swept all three doubles play for the 3-0 lead heading into singles play where the Highlanders seemed to pick up momentum in some of the matches as three of the six singles match went into three sets.
Honestee Sphabmixay (Philadelphia, Pa.) tallied a team point for the Blue and White as she defeated her opponent easily with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles before
Sally Phung (Philadelphia, Pa.) struggled to find her rhythm at No. 6 flight, losing to Cairn's Britta Nelson by a score of 6-4, 7-5 for the Highlanders' first and only team point of the match.
Honora Hegarty (Abington, Pa.) started off slow at singles flight No. 1, dropping the first set 6-0 before she regained her confidence to tie up the match at 7-5 in the second set before closing out the third set with a 6-2 victory to remain undefeated in singles play on the year.
Olya Popili (Philadelphia, Pa.) needed a three set match for the win at No. 2 singles, losing the first set in a tiebreaker with a 6-7 (2-7) score before rebounding in the next two sets on a 6-4, 6-3 decision for the win.
Sheena Philip (Philadelphia, Pa.) also struggled from the start at No. 3 singles as she dropped a close 6-4 score in the first set before gaining steam to push her way through for the 6-3, 10-3 win to seal the win for Penn State Abington.
Although the Nittany Lions have already secured the team victory,
Gabrielle Eberhardt (Cherry Hill, N.J.) picked up her third singles win in straight sets by a pair of 6-2 scores to wrap up the contest.
Abington will host Sarah Lawrence College on Saturday at 1 p.m. for its final home match of the fall season.
