For the third year in a row, the Abington men's basketball team has made the NEAC tournament and will travel to Washington D.C. to face off against Gallaudet tonight at 7:00 PM. On Saturday, the Nittany Lions were sitting on the bubble, but a comeback win by Gallaudet over Penn State Berks pushed Abington into the NEAC tournament.
A young but talented roster boasted the top offense in the NEAC, averaging 76 points per game. The Nittany Lions also placed two of the NEAC's top five scorers, as
Dequan Jackson leads the conference with 19.3 points per game and
Max Alton in third averaging 18.3 points per game.
"I'm so pleased that this team can continue its season" said head coach
Chris Potash. "Especially for
Max Alton and
Alex Agyedu, whose roles have had to evolve over the course of this season from what was needed of them in prior seasons, based on our current personnel.Â
Devin Jones and
Dequan Jackson are consistent and explosive scorers whose best basketball is still hopefully ahead of them."
Abington will face a tough task in the first round of the tournament facing Gallaudet. The Bison posted two victories over the Nittany Lions earlier in the season.
"Although with this younger roster we weren't able to match the NEAC records of the prior two teams, we were quite competitive in most NEAC games. We only lost two contests by two points. So with that said, we hope to compete and make the most of our opportunity in this NEAC Quarterfinal with the same competitiveness we have shown at times this season."
