Box Score Washington D.C.- The Penn State Abington men's basketball team made history Tuesday night, earning their first NEAC playoff win in school history by defeating Gallaudet 76-73.
Abington (10-16, 8-10 NEAC) came into the game as the No. 3 seed in the South Division while Gallaudet was the No. 2 seed.
Gallaudet would jump out to an early 12-8 lead just eight minutes into the game. Abington would then tie the game at 12-12 after a
Dequan Jackson (Philadelphia, Pa.) layup was good at the 12:21 mark of the first half.
Devin Jones' (Philadelphia, Pa. three-pointer at the 4:11 mark of the first half would give Abington a 31-24 lead.
Max Alton (Pennington, N.J.) would hit a three-pointer of his own with 21 seconds remaining to extend the Nittany Lion lead to 42-26.
Abington was 16-of-27 (59.3%) from the field in the first half while shooting 5-of-7 (71.4%) from three-point range in the opening 20 minutes.
After the break, the Bison would begin to claw their way back into the game. A pair of good free throws from Gallaudet's Andy Cruz would cut the Abington lead to 50-43.
Josh Bair's (Oakford, Pa.) layup at the 8:53 mark of the second half would give Abington their 11-point lead back at 55-44.
Gallaudet would then go on a 7-0 run to cut the Abington lead to 55-51 with 6:17 remaining in the game. On Abington's next possession,
Michael Davis' (Philadelphia, Pa.) layup gave Abington a 57-51 lead with 6:03 remaining.
Gallaudet's Raymond Nelson would hit a jumper with 3:23 remaining cutting Abington's lead to 63-61. Abington would take a five point lead at 70-65 after
Devin Jones converted a jump shot with 51 seconds remaining. Both Jones and Jackson would hit key foul shots in the closing seconds as Abington pulled off the victory.
Jackson finished the game with a game-high 32 points on 11-of-21 shooting. He was a clutch 9-of-10 from the free throw line in the game.
Devin Jones chipped in 21 points of his own on 8-of-11 shooting.
The Nittany Lions were 27-of-53 (50.9%) from the field for the game, and was 17-of-21 from the free throw line.
Abington returns to action this Saturday, February 28th, as they square off against SUNY Cobleskill in the NEAC semi-finals. Game time is scheduled 4:00 p.m. at Lancaster Bible. Abington dropped their only meeting with the Fighting Tigers 62-51 back on February 8
th.
