LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's tennis team opened its season on the road at Cairn but fell to the Highlanders 5-4 on Friday evening.

The Nittany Lions opened the match with the first point off a strong 8-0 win in the number two doubles competition from Honora Hegarty and Sally Phung. Next Cairn took the number three doubles match to even the score. Madison Kimball and Janie Saile fell behind early 4-0, in the number one doubles but their rally fell short in the 8-5 defeat. 

Cairn extended its lead to 3-1 with a win in the number six singles competition, but Kimball earned the next point with a 6-0, 6-2 win in the number two singles match. The highlanders put the Nittany Lions on the ropes with a win in the number five spot, but Sally Phung and Janie Saile battled to win their matches to tie the game at 4-4.  Cairn's Rebecca Graber earned the final match point in the number one singles match with a 6-0, 6-4 win.

The Nittany Lions will return to the court when they travel to Albright College on September 20, at 3:00 p.m.
