Abington Defeats McDaniel, 5-4, in Non-Conference Match

Box Score Finksburg, Md. – The Penn State Abington women's tennis team picked up its first victory of the season after coming away with a 5-4 triumph over McDaniel College in non-conference action on Friday at the Carroll Tennis Center.

How It Happened
 
*  Abington secured the point at first doubles as the duo of juniors Tinatin Sadzaglishvili and Elizabeth Turner cruised to an 8-1 victory of McDaniel's Carly Jarkiewicz and Liz Fyfe. 
 
* Sadzaglishvili and Turner went on to win their respective singles matches over Jarkiewicz and Fyfe.  Sadzaglishvili defeated Jarkiewicz in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0 at first singles.  Turner also won in straight sets as she was victorious over Fyfe at second singles, 6-4, 6-1.
 
* Freshman Soniyah Youngblood recorded her first career singles victory as she defeated McDaniel's Mackenzie McCarter in straight sets at fourth singles by the score of 6-3, 6-3.  Youngblood's victory gave Abington a 4-3 lead in the match.
 
* McDaniel took the fifth singles match which featured a back-and-forth affair between sophomore Isabella DePorre and Li z Hough.  Both players had three match points in the tiebreak but Hough won the last three points for the 14-12 to take the match, 8-7.
 
* The match came down to sixth singles as junior Kelsey Patterson came through with the victory to give Abington its first win of the season.  Patterson was tied 3-3 with Claire Hopkins before winning five of the last six games to take the match, 8-4.
 
* McDaniel received points in second and third doubles as well as third and fifth singles.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the second meeting between Abington and McDaniel since the 2019-20 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 2-0 all-time versus McDaniel in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, March 18 as the Nittany Lions host Penn State Brandywine in a non-conference contest.  Match time is set for 12 p.m. at the Abington Tennis Courts.
