Lady Lions Tame Mustangs 6-0

Box Score Morrisville, N.Y. - Penn State Abington managed to eek out a victory in a much more comfortable fashion today against Morrisville State. After coming behind in the final minutes to secure a 3-2 win against Cazenovia yesterday, the Lady Lions (9-4, 7-2 NEAC) came out and thumped the Mustangs (0-10-1, 0-8 NEAC) by a score of 6-0. Two different players scored twice for Abington as they rolled to their second straight victory.

It all started just three-and-a-half minutes into the game. Junior midfielder Kirsten Quinn had possession of the ball in the offensive zone and sent a pass to senior Kaitlin Kozole. Kozole managed to get free from her defender and made it to the top of the 18. It was from here that Kozole would launch a great shot from distance. The ball made its way past sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Zidzik and into the net, giving the Lady Lions a quick 1-0 lead.

Penn State Abington would get on the board only one more time before the halftime whistle. In the 27th minute, Alyssa Kaye managed to head in a goal off a corner kick, one of six that the Lady Lions earned in the half. The team managed to rattle off twelve shots in the first half, while sophomore goalkeeper Gabrielle Benedict made they only two saves she needed in the half as well.

In the second half, Abington came out immediately ready to extend their lead, which they did just 25 seconds into the frame. Freshman Nicole Kidd made a great pass that led Desirae Holmes in alone on a breakaway on goal. Holmes, a freshman and one of the leading scorers on the team, knew exactly what to do in the one-on-one situation, slotting the ball past Zidzik and into the back of the net for a 3-0 lead.

Holmes would quickly add her second goal of the day just five minutes later. Once again on a corner kick sent in by Palmer, the ball was bobbled and lost by Zidzik. Holmes was right there to clean up the mess, and her season-high sixth goal made the scoreline 4-0.

Abington would tally two more goals before the day was done. First, it was Kozole who netted a second goal of her own in the 67th minute. This time, the senior did most of the work herself, getting the unassisted tally on a shot from the center of the penalty box. Then, Palmer would close out the scoring with an unassisted goal of her own in the 77th minute.

All told, the Lady Lions outshot the Mustangs 22-3 on the afternoon, a dominant performance en route to their fifth shutout victory of the season. The 6-0 win moves the Lady Lions into a tie for second place in the NEAC conference with Lancaster Bible. The next game for Abington will also be their next home game, as the Lady Lions return to Abington High School to face off against Notre Dame University of Maryland.
