Box Score Keuka Park, N.Y. - The Penn State Abington women's soccer team got their New York weekend off to a good start early in their game today against Keuka College. However, as the match wore on, conditions went downhill from there, with the Lady Lions eventually falling to the Storm by a score of 4-2 in the NEAC conference opener.
Junior midfielder
Kirsten Quinn opened the scoring very early on in the match, which was played in the midst of a constant pouring rain. Quinn managed to break through the Keuka defense and secure a breakaway, slotting the ball into the net just 3:42 into the game. The goal was Quinn's third on the season, giving her the team lead at this early point in 2012.
From all appearances, this early goal from the Nittany Lions started a fire in the belly of the Keuka side, and they carried the momentum from this point on. The Storm knotted the game back up at one goal apiece in the 20
th minute of the game. Senior Nicole Scharick latched onto a loose ball on the left side and managed to loft a shot over Lady Lions goalkeeper
Gabrielle Benedict and nestle into the goal just inside the far post.
From this point on, Keuka dominated the stat sheet for the rest of the first half. Penn State Abington did not get off a single shot, while the Storm let fly with six more. Things stayed knotted at 1-1, however, thanks to some great saves by Benedict, who finished with 11 saves overall on the day.
Early in the second half, Keuka blew the game wide open with a brace of goals scored just 21 seconds apart. First, in the 52
nd minute, senior midfielder Jessica Bandrowski managed to take hold of a loose ball in the box and dribble her way past Benedict, sliding the ball inside the far post and giving the Storm their first lead of the day. Immediately following the restart after this goal, it was Scharick again, this time taking control of another loose ball and beating Benedict. Just eight minutes into the second half, Keuka had jumped ahead 3-1.
Bandrowski would continue the alternating goals theme for Keuka to close out their scoring. Penn State Abington gave up another penalty inside of the box, their second penalty allowed in two games. In the last game, Benedict was able to erase the mistake and save the penalty, but in today's match Bandrowski was able to slide the ball past the Lady Lions goalkeeper and into the net for a 4-1 lead.
Penn State Abington did their best to stage a comeback, and we successful in getting a goal in the 63
rd minute. Freshman midfielder
Cindy Wade managed to drill a shot past Keuka keeper Marriah Gough for her second goal of the season to make the score 4-2. However, this was all the Lady Lions could come up with, as Keuka held them scoreless for the rest of the half to close out their victory.
With the loss, their second straight overall and first in the conference, the Lady Lions drop to a record of 2-2 (0-1 NEAC). They have the opportunity to get back in the win column immediately, however, as they continue their New York road trip tomorrow at 1 p.m. against Wells College in Aurora, N.Y.
