Box Score PHILADELPHIA - Saturday afternoon Penn State Abington women's soccer team met Wells College for a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest at Father Judge High School. The Nittany Lions are coming off a big 3-0 win against a conference rival in Lancaster Bible and Wells College is entering today's game after a big win against the College of St. Elizabeth where they won 7-1 last week.
The game started off with both teams coming out strong, especially on defense. Neither team was able to get much going but the Blue and White were able to control the ball for most of first half. The Nittany Lions managed to record 7 shots on goal in the first half but had difficulty finding the back of the net. Wells College wasn't able to get much going on offense thanks to the stout defense by the Nittany Lions.
The second half started out much of the same with Penn State Abington controlling the game and the ball for the majority of the half. In the 54
th minute Penn State Abington was able to get on the board after a goal by junior midfielder
Mallory Mugnier (Glenside, Pa.). After the ball was deflected on a cross, the Wells keeper, Olivia Baum, came out of the net to recover the ball but wasn't able to handle it as Mugnier got control of it and finished in an empty net to make the score 1-0. The way the Nittany Lions defense was swarming today, one goal was enough to secure the victory; however as time was running down the Nittany Lions added an insurance goal as Mugnier crossed the ball to the middle of the box, finding sophomore
Ashley Quenzer open (Philadelphia, Pa.) to lob the ball over the goal keeper's head with two seconds remaining in the game to make it 2-0. Wells College tried to make something happen on offense the entire game but Penn State Abington made sure they secured their third straight shutout.
After today's game, Wells College drops to 4-5 in conference play and 4-11 on the year, while the Nittany Lions extended their winning streak to five games and increased their record to 11-2 overall and 8-1 in conference play to remain in second place. Penn State Abington will return to action tomorrow in a conference matchup against Keuka College. Kickoff is slated for 2pm at Germantown Academy.
