Men's Tennis Defeats Harrisburg, Falls to Rutgers-Camden in Conference Title Game

CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's tennis team finished runner-up in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) West Division Championship to Rutgers-Camden on Thursday.

Abington started the day as number three seed in the tournament and managed to edge conference foe Penn State Harrisburg by a score of 5-4 to advance to the championship round. In the final round, Rutgers-Camden proved to be too much for Abington as the Nittany Lions came up short by a score of 5-2 at the Birchwood Tennis Club on Thursday afternoon.  (Boxscore)

Starting with the semifinal round early this morning, Abington, who lost to Harrisburg by a score of 8-1 in the regular season matchup, jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the doubles action was finished. Nigel Hopkinson and Ross Raddi edged their opponent 8-3 before Jordan Domsky and partner Matthew Wolff picked up No. 3 doubles in a tight battle, only to come out victorious with a 9-7 decision.

Domsky stayed hot with a 5-3, 6-4 win out of first singles as Hopkinson followed suit with a 6-2, 7-5 victory to give Abington the 4-1 lead. However, Harrisburg battled from behind, winning the next three matches to tie it up, leaving it all up to Abington's Matthew Wolff and Harrisburg's Alex Koltun at No. 6 singles. Wolff edged Koltun  in straight sets, however it wasn't as easy as it looked as Wolff needed a tiebreaker in the first set  to get the win with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 decision.

With the win, Abington advances to the championship round against the number one seed of Rutgers-Camden.

Rutgers-Camden, who won by a score of 7-2 in the regular season matchup, jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the doubles action was finished. Abington's top team of Domsky and Wolff emerged with an 8-4 victory to stop Rutgers-Camden's chances for a doubles sweep.

The Scarlet Raptors swept three of the four matches to end the tournament as champions, needing only five team points to win. Steven Ly came up with the victory with a 6-2, 6-2 victory out of third singles for Abington.

The Nittany Lions will wrap up the 2012-13 campaign on Friday, April 25th at the NEAC West individual championship beginning at 8 a.m. The tournament will take place at the Birchwood Tennis Club. For tournament pairings, please click here.
