Penn State Abington Gets Back in the NEAC Win Column

3 different Nittany Lions score in 3-1 win over SUNY Cobleskill

Box Score Cobleskill, N.Y. – Coming off their first NEAC loss of the season last weekend to Penn State Berks, the Penn State Abington women's soccer squad was looking to get back on the winning side of things with today's match against SUNY Cobleskill. The Nittany Lions rebounded nicely, jumping out to a three goal lead before cruising home with the 3-1 victory.

Leading goalscorer Mallory Mugnier got things started off well for Penn State Abington (6-2, 3-1 NEAC). Just 19 minutes into the match, the junior took possession of the ball inside the SUNY Cobleskill penalty box and blasted a rocket of a shot into the netting to put the Nittany Lions ahead 1-0. Just five minutes later, sophomore midfielder Victoria Parker got into the action with a goal of her own. With the Nittany Lions possession the ball once again deep inside the SUNY Cobleskill end, Parker took possession of the ball just outside the penalty box. She was able to deftly chip the ball over the head of the Cobleskill goalkeeper and just under the crossbar, giving the Nittany Lions their second goal of the day and Parker her first of the season. Finally, Cindy Wade closed the scoring for the Nittany Lions just three minutes later. Wade was able to work her way into a one-on-one opportunity with the Fighting Tigers goalkeeper and deftly finished with a shot into the netting to make it 3-nil just 29 minutes into the first half.

Over the rest of the game, Penn State Abington continued to pepper the SUNY Cobleskill net with shots, accumulating 13 over the course of the match. However, Cobleskill keeper Hayley MacLean made seven saves on the afternoon to limit the Nittany Lions to their three early goals. The Fighting Tigers (0-8, 0-4 NEAC) finally got their offense going in the second half, and Penn State Abington keeper Alyssa Kaye made six saves to keep the shutout intact for 81 minutes. However, the hosts finally broke through with a goal with just eight minutes left with a long breakaway chance that just eluded Kaye. In the end, though, it was no matter, as the Nittany Lions held on for the 3-1 victory.

The win moves Penn State Abington up to 3-1 in NEAC play and back into the top tier of contenders in the conference. The squad will have a chance to continue climbing the standings when they get back out on the pitch tomorrow afternoon for their second of back-to-back games. The Nittany Lions will face off against SUNYIT, a squad coming off a 0-5 loss to Penn State Berks.
