Women's Soccer Shuts Down Shock 6-1

Nittany Lions use 5 goal first half to complete weekend sweep

Box Score Abington, Pa. – The Nittany Lions women's soccer squad cruised through another game earlier this afternoon, using a five-goal first half to knock off Washington Adventist University. Freshman Molly Wyman scored two goals while sophomore Desirae Holmes assisted on three in the 6-1 victory.

It took fifteen minutes for the Penn State Abington (3-1, 1-0 NEAC) offense to fully click, but once it did, the goals came early and often. Wyman got things started with an easy goal off a cross from Kayla Nolan. Nolan dribbled all the way down the right side into the right corner of the attacking zone before sending a perfect cross into the box. Wyman got on the other end of it and easily slid the ball into the net for the 1-0 lead. Seven minutes later, it was Wyman again who scored what would ultimately be the game-winner. This time, the freshman blasted a solid header into the net off a corner kick from Holmes for her second goal of the game and third of the young season. Six minutes later, Abington got on the board off a corner kick once again. This time, Holmes served the ball to the near post, where Ashley Quenzer was waiting. Quenzer headed the ball across the goal box, where junior Brianna Heck got her own head on it and sent the ball into the goal for her first of the year.

Washington Adventist (1-0) goalkeeper Tashieka Russell played a solid game in net, making some spectacular plays en route to making 21 saves on the year. However, the Nittany Lions offensive onslaught continued despite Russell's best efforts. In the 33rd minute, Holmes played a great pass from midfield to the right side where Megan Murphy was waiting. Murphy took the ball in stride, cutting into the penalty box on the right and curling a shot around Russell and into the net to make it 4-0. A few minutes later, Jacqueline Alexander netted her third goal of the season by pouncing on a loose ball in the box and shooting through a defender's legs for a 5-0 lead. In the second half, Brigitta Good got the lone goal for the Blue and White on a tremendous shot from outside the box. The laser-like ball shot past the keeper and into the upper left corner to give Penn State Abington their sixth and final goal of the game. The Shock would ultimately get one back in the 75th minute when a cross sailed over the head of goalkeeper Alyssa Kaye and a Washington Adventist forward chested the ball into the goal to make the final score 6-1.

With the win, the Nittany Lions move to 3-1 on the year overall and will take their 1-0 NEAC record on the road to Gallaudet for their next game. The women will face the Bison in Washington on Saturday, September 14th at 11:00 am. Be sure to keep checking abingtonsports.com for all your updates on Nittany Lions athletics!
