Women's Basketball Falls in Road Test at St. Elizabeth

Schmidt and Winston lead Nittany Lions in 45-55 loss

Box Score Morristown, N.J. – The women's basketball squad of Penn State Abington put in yet another solid effort on the road earlier Tuesday evening against College of Saint Elizabeth, and they managed to play a close game well into the second half. However, it simply wasn't enough in the end, as the Screaming Eagles held serve at home with a 55-45 win. Junior Jessica Schmidt and senior Janay Winston led the way for the Blue and White with 17 and 15 points respectively, and each was just one rebound away from a double-double. For Saint Elizabeth, it was senior guards Kelly O'Dell and Cheyenne grant who did the damage with 15 and 13 points themselves.

The Nittany Lions (2-7, 0-4 NEAC) managed to put the hosts under heavy pressure early on in the game thanks to some hot shooting and defense. While the Blue and White shot a solid 9-21 from the floor in the half, they were also able to limit the Screaming Eagles to just nine field goals themselves on ten more shots. This strong shooting helped Penn State Abington overcome numerous turnovers and go into halftime trailing by just one point at 22-23. Unfortunately, the turnover bug would continue to plague the Nittany Lions throughout the contest. Over the course of the affair, the Blue and White turned the ball over 28 times. Unfortunately, in the second half Penn State Abington's shooting percentage slipped to just 25% on the shots they took, and the Screaming Eagles were able to generate a much more efficient offense themselves. Over the entire game, both teams shot roughly the same – 32.7% for Abington compared to 33.9% for Saint Elizabeth – but it was the second half where the hosts ran away with the game. Ultimately, the Screaming Eagles took home the victory by a score of 55-45. Schmidt and Winston led the squad in scoring while shooting a combined 12-22, while Stephanie Keyes added nine points for the Nittany Lions.

With the loss, Penn State Abington is still in search of their first North Eastern Athletic Conference victory, and the squad will get their next chance at that win when they take on Morrisville State at home this coming Saturday. The Mustangs currently sit in the middle of a packed NEAC North Division with a 2-3 conference record and 4-8 overall mark. Gametime is scheduled for 3:00 pm this Saturday on the campus of Penn State Abington.
