Box Score Washington, D.C. - The Penn State Abington women's basketball squad dropped a tightly contested game earlier Thursday night on the road at Trinity (D.C.). The Nittany Lions outshot the hosts, and junior forward
Jessica Schmidt was the leading scorer with 15 points on the night, but Trinity got to the line 29 times on the evening and made nearly 50% of their three point shots en route to a 49-58 victory.
Janay Winston and
Stephanie Keyes each chipped in another ten points for the Blue and White, while Ashley Brown and Shelby Swan led Trinity with 13 and 11, respectively.
Penn State Abington (2-6, 0-3 NEAC) actually jumped out to an early lead thanks to some hot shooting to open the game. Winston got things going by draining a jumper right out of the gate, and after Trinity tied it back up, Schmidt and Winston hit back-to-back jumpers to make it a 6-2 game. It was a lead, however small, that the Nittany Lions would hang on to until their were just seven minutes remaining in the first half. At that point, Trinity went on a 9-4 run of their own to close out the half and take a slim 26-23 lead into the locker room.
Once again, the Nittany Lions started the next half off right, as sophomore guard
Teharah Worrell opened the second frame by draining a three-ball to knot the game right back up. Unfortunately, it was as close as Penn State Abington would get for the rest of the game. Trinity (5-2) used a 3-for-7 performance from beyond the arc and, perhaps more impressively, went to the free throw line 18 times in the second half to open up as much as a twelve point lead over the visitors. The Nittany Lions made a valiant effort at a late comeback when Keyes drained a three and then Winston sank a pair of free throws to get the Blue and White within seven. But it was as close as the game would get, and ultimately the hosts hung on for a 49-58 win.
Combine this hard-fought loss against a tough opponent with the Nittany Lions 66-28 win over Notre Dame (Md.) last weekend and the 2014 calendar year is off to a good start for the women's basketball squad. Now, the team will look to bring that success back home when they take on the Express of Wells College this Saturday afternoon. The Nittany Lions will be looking for their first NEAC conference win of the season, while the Express sit just a game back of first place in the North Division and will be looking to make up ground. Gametime is set for 4:00 pm on the campus of Penn State Abington.
