ABINGTON, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's tennis team closed out the 2013-14 regular season with a 9-0 sweep over the visiting Defenders of Baptist Bible College on Tuesday afternoon.
The win puts Abington at 8-5 on the year as the Nittany Lions prepare for the North Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament, slated to start on Saturday, April 26.
Due to the potential of thunderstorms in the vicinity, the match was modified to a one set, best of eight points dual rather than the usual two sets formation.
Abington began the day sweeping all three doubles flights, dropping just four games as senior
Steven Ly and junior
Kevin Wilkinson picked up their sixth consecutive doubles win, finishing 9-3 on the year. Duos juniors
James Howell and
Monte Dunson picked up the win at No. 1 Doubles with an 8-2 decision as freshmen Mike Hermann and
Sam Borai paired up for the 8-0 sweep.
The winning tradition continued into singles play as Herman and Howell picked up a pair of wins at No. 1 and 2 flights, respectively to clinch the winning point for the Blue and White. Dunson, Ly, Wilkinson, and Borai added the four additional match points for the 9-0 sweep on the day.
The Nittany Lions will now prepare for the 2014 NEAC West Team Championship as the No. 2 seed and will take on the No. 3 seed, Penn State Berks in the semifinal round on Saturday, April 26. The semifinal round is slated to commence at 9:10 a.m.
