Newman Named United East Offensive Player of the Week

Latham, N.Y. – Penn State Abington senior Naila Newman was named the United East Conference (UEC) Women's Basketball Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 8 as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon. Newman is earning weekly honors for the first time in her career.

In a 2-0 week against conference opponents, Newman averaged 19 points, 9.5 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 6.5 steals per game as the Nittany Lions increased their season-long winning streak to seven straight games.

Newman highlighted the week with her first career triple-double in the team's victory at Penn State Berks (W, 80-43) last Wednesday.  She finished the game with 16 points (6-10 FG) to go along with 11 assists and 10 steals.  Newman followed that up with a season-high 22 points in the win over Gallaudet University (W, 91-33).  She also added nine assists, five boards and three steals against the Bison.

Newman's triple-double is the fourth in program history and the second this season.  She joins teammate, junior Amina Reid, who recorded her own triple-double back in January against Manor College.

In 22 games this season, Newman is averaging slightly under 10.0 points per game to go along with 4.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists per contest.  Her next assist will be the 200th of her Abington career as she currently has 199.

Abington (16-6, 9-2 UEC) returns to action on Tuesday night as the Nittany Lions travel to face Keystone College in United East action.  Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
