Women's Basketball Gets First Win of the Season

Box Score
Abington, Pa. – Three players scored in double-figures for the Lady Lions as the Penn State Abington women's basketball team picked up their first win of the 2012-13 season, knocking off Cairn University 63-32 Tuesday night.

Freshman guard Teharah Worrell finished with a double-double on the night. Worrell recorded 14 points and 10 rebounds, while senior forward Trish Watson led the team with 20 points, nine rebounds and six steals.  Junior Jaclyn Vandiver kicked in 12 points with five rebounds, as Janay Winston posted eight points and six rebounds. Penn State Abington also knocked down a perfect 18-for-18 free throws, compared to just a 3-7 effort from Cairn.

The Lady Lions shot the ball better than they had in recent games, but struggled again from long range. Worrell and Watson finished a combined 4-15 from beyond the arc and Abington shot just 19 percent as a team from distance.

Abington won the battle on the boards, out-rebounding the Highlanders 52-41. The Lady Lions' defense held the Highlanders to 22.6 percent from the field, despite Cairn's 42.9 percent from the three-point range on seven attempts.

The Lady Lions jumped out to an early lead with an 8-0 run and were able to maintain a slim advantage for the first four minutes of the game. With 9:21 remaining in the opening period, sophomore Jessica Schmidt sliced through the visitors' defense on a fast break and converted a layup, jumpstarting a 6-3 run to give the Lady Lions a 32-12 lead. After the Highlanders made both  throws from the charity stripe, Abington responded back with a three-pointer by Worrell to put Abington ahead by 19 points at the half.

The Lady Lions came out much more aggressive in the second half, determined to put the game out of reach thanks to a steal by Worrell who then posted a layup in the paint to jumpstart a 11-5 run with 7:57 remaining in the game to extend the Abington lead by 33 points. Cairn responded with two baskets for five points before Watson bombed a three to seal the win in the final minute and the Lady Lions held on for the 63-32 win.

Abington goes back on the road on Saturday against Cedar Crest College before concluding the 2012 year with a three-game home stand. Be sure to be checking in at abingtonsports.com for all your Nittany Lions basketball updates.
