Women’s Basketball Cruises to Second Straight Victory

Box Score Allentown, Pa. – Penn State Abington put three players in double figures and claimed a 64- 58 win over Cedar Crest College in women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Lions improve their record at 2-3 on the season, while the Falcons fall to 2-7.

Junior Janay Winston led the way with 20 points, five rebounds and four assists, while freshman Teharah Worrell added 17 points and two rebounds with four steals. Sophomore Jessica Schmidt posted 13 points and nine rebounds, while senior Trish Watson followed with five points and four steals on the day.

Megan DeMutis led Cedar Crest with 19 points. Amber Wehry tallied a dozen points with three rebounds, while DeJanet Lantion followed with 11 points.

Abington jumped to a quick start, scoring six points in the just three minutes following a pair of layups by Jaclyn Vandiver and a basket by Watson. Worrell then posted a three-pointer at the 9:21 mark to start a 13-0 run to make it 28-11 with less than six minutes remaining in the first half.

Both teams exchanged baskets several times, but Abington's hard press defense limited the Falcons to shoot just 27.3 percent from the field. Winston tallied a jumper with ten second remaining in the half to extend the Abington lead to 18 points to make it 38-20 at the half.

The second half showed Cedar Crest fighting back from the get go, however after each Falcon basket, the Lady Lions answered back with a basket of their own. Both teams went back and forth for a good 10 minutes before Worrell bombed a three-pointer to push the lead margin to 24 at the 7:58 mark.

Despite a comfortable lead, Abington started to become too comfortable and allowed Cedar Crest to dig back into the game, scoring 16 points off seven turnovers in a span of four minutes to trail by 11. Abington continued to struggle in the final minutes, as the Falcons hoped to not only tie up the game, but take the lead for the first time in the game. However, even with a three-pointer by Cedar Crest's Megan DeMutis to cut deficit to just six points, time expired and Abington held on, 64-58, for its second win of the season.

Abington shot 43 percent from the field and went 8-of-11 (72%) at the line. Cedar Crest connected on 36 percent from the field and made 20-of-23 at the stripe. Abington also held a 64-29 edge on the glass.

The Lady Lions will open NEAC Conference play tomorrow afternoon when they host the Phoenix of Wilson College (2-3, 0-2 NEAC) at 1 p.m. Be sure to check in at abingtonsports.com for all your Penn State Abington Nittany Lions updates.
