Box Score Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team won its third consecutive game in commanding fashion, 64-46, over Wilson College Sunday afternoon. The victory marked Abington's first conference win since 2012 and improves the Nittany Lions to an even .500 (3-3) overall and 1-0 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC), while dropping the Phoenix to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
Senior
Trish Watson, who was making her sixth straight start, recorded 23 points, shooting 3-for-4 from the arc, and seven assists along with three steals on the day, while
Jessica Schmidt tallied a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
On the opposite end of the floor, junior
Jaclyn Vandiver shined as the defensive menace after recording a career-high 18 rebounds, including nine defensive boards, in only 21 minutes of work. The forward had 11 defensive boards and seven offensive rebounds.
Janay Winston was a crux on defense, preventing the Phoenix from creating second chance opportunities, while igniting offensive runs for Abington. She also had 13 points, three assists, and two assists.
Abington jump started the game during the first half with a 9-2 run in the first five minutes. Wilson attempted to keep the game in range but could not control the possession of the ball, turning it over 13 times, allowing the Lady Lions to score 15 points. The troubles continued for Wilson as Abington responded with a 21-5 run to take a 34-11 advantage at 5:46. That critical run was enough to put Wilson out of range for good.
Abington managed to expand its lead to 34-16 by halftime.
Following the break, the Lady Lions scurried to a 25-point lead, 47-22 at 15:29. With less than 10 to play, they would see their lead as high as 28 during three different points.
Off the bench sophomore
Kiera Kurtz had five points and three rebounds, as freshman
Teharah Worrell made nine points, three boards and two assists.
Abington shot 41 percent (25-for-61) from the field, while limiting Wilson to 29.7 percent (19-for-64). The Lady Lions also held differentials in rebounding (51-40), and assists (16-9), and forced the Phoenix to commit 16 turnovers, which they converted into 17 points.
