Lady Lions Quiet Screaming Eagles 2-1

Box Score Florham Park, N.J. - The Penn State Abington women's soccer team got back into the win column this afternoon with a well-played 2-1 victory over the College of St. Elizabeth. Freshman midfielder Cindy Wade netted her team-leading fourth goal of the season, adding an assist as well on the eventual game winner.

After a tough 0-1 defeat to Bryn Mawr College the previous afternoon in which the Lady Lions (4-3, 2-1 NEAC) didn't see much of the ball, today's effort was a much more refreshing experience. Abington got on the scoreboard very early on in the game. After sophomore forward Menel Tlili got the ball inside the penalty area in the third minute, it turned into a scrum for possession. St. Elizabeth (2-3, 1-2 NEAC) worked their best to clear the ball out of the scoring area, but it managed instead to work its way to the feet of Wade. The freshman coolly slotted the ball into the net to finish the play, putting the Lady Lions up 1-0 just under 3 minutes into the game.

It would be more of the same for Penn State Abington in the rest of the half, as the Lady Lions were dominant in possession for the opening 45 minutes. Abington outshot St. Elizabeth 9-0, forcing senior goalkeeper Catherine De La Cruz into making 4 of her 5 saves on the day in this frame. De La Cruz was up to the task, however, and it would not be until the second half that the Lady Lions were able to get back on the scoreboard with the eventual game-winner.

Just into the 61st minute, it was Wade involved in the scoring once again. This time, the starting forward sent a ball into the right side of the box, finding senior midfielder Brittany Palmer. Palmer collected the ball and sent a shot the opposite direction, back to the left and past De La Cruz into the netting. The goal, the second of the season for Palmer, was an important one for the Lady Lions as St. Elizabeth would strike back quickly just six minutes later.

After earning one of their two corners on the day, senior forward Amy Rowe sent a curling ball into the box, hoping to find one of her fellow teammates. However, a Lady Lion was actually the first to connect with the ball. Unfortunately, the ball was deflected back onto goal and into the net, bringing the Screaming Eagles a goal closer at 2-1.

It would be the only goal the home team would get however, as the Lady Lions would hold on the rest of the way to get the victory. The win gets Penn State Abington back over .500 once again in both overall season and conference play. They finally come back home for four straight home games, opening on Tuesday night against Lancaster Bible College. Gametime is set for 5 p.m. at Father Judge High School in Philadelphia, Pa.
