Reading, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team dropped its second consecutive conference game after a 79-73 loss to Penn State Berks on Wednesday night at the Beaver Community Center.
Trish Watson led the Nittany Lions with a career-high 32 points and seven assists.
Jaclyn Vandiver scored 11 points and grabbed 12 boards.
Jessica Schmidt added 13 for Abington who fell 4-9, 3-4 NEAC.
Sherrie Satchel led all scorers with 22 points on 8-of-9 shooting. Kellie Wilson scored 18 and Nichole Young-Trapp added 14 for Penn State Berks who won their second straight game to improve to 4-9, 3-4 NEAC.
As both teams opened the first half contesting for the lead, Watson nailed a shot from beyond the arc to give Abington a five point lead at the 15:05 mark.
The lead did not last long as Berks responded back, and later led by as much as five points of their off with a jumper by Young-Trapp at the two minute mark. Abington remained resilient, countering with a jumper by Vandiver and a pair of free throws by
Teharah Worrell and Watson to make a one point game. With just four seconds remaining in the half, Berks was credited a layup by Kellie Wilson for a three point cushion at the intermission.
The second half told the same tale as Abington battled its way for its third lead of the game as Watson nailed another trey at the 14:45 mark to tie up the game at 42 points apiece. By the midway point of the second half, the game had three ties and eight lead changes as Berks took control of the lead most of the way, leading by as much as eight points at the 7:37 mark before Abington battled its way back into the game in the final minutes.
With just three minutes remaining, Berk's eight point lead dwindled to four as Watson nailed all throws from the stripe, followed by two more from
Janay Winston a minute later. Waton's hot shooting continued in the in the final minutes as she not only nailed a three-pointer, but added two additional foul shots at the 1:17 mark to give Abington what would be the final go-ahead basket, putting the Nittany Lions ahead 70-69.
Berks quickly called a time-out to recollect and struck back with a 5-0 run before Watson's trey made it a one-possession game with just 36 seconds left on the clock. Berks used the clock to their advantage and penetrated through Abington's defense to post a pair of layups in the final seconds to close out the tight game 79-73 for the win.
Abington shot 37.7 percent from the floor, hitting 23-of-61 shots, and had 16 assists – led by Watson's seven – to just 18 turnovers.
Watson went 11-for-15 (73 percent) from the charity stripe, which marked her career-best.
