Washington, D.C. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team snapped its four-game losing streak with a 66-28 victory over Gallaudet University on Saturday afternoon. Leading the way for the Lady Lions was senior guard
Trish Watson and
Jessica Schmidt, who scored 22 and 18 points, respectively.
With the win, Abington improves to 8-9 overall and 6-4 in the NEAC, sitting in third place in the south division, while with the loss Gallaudet drops to 2-15 overall and 0-10 in the NEAC.
After shooting below 40 percent from the field in their previous four losses, the Lady Lions got back on track by shooting 51 percent (25-for-49) today against the Bisons. Abington also went 7-for-14 (50 percent) from the three-point range and 9-for-13 (69 percent) at the charity stripe.
In the opening half, senior guard
Trish Watson posted a trio of treys for Abington as the Lady Lions tied up the game at the 13:36 mark. Thirty seconds later, a lay-up by sophomore forward
Jessica Schmidt made a lay-up not only gave Abington its first lead of the game, but the margin widen to a five point lead, thanks to a three-pointer by junior guard
Jaclyn Vandiver to make it a 14-9 ballgame.
However the lead didn't last long as Galludet managed to stampede its way back in a span of three minutes to tie up the game at 14. With just over two minutes remaining, both teams battled to take advantage of the lead as Watson once again pulled in the clutch, nailing a jumper to tie it for the fifth time in the half at 24 points apiece. Abington's defense continued to struggle in the final minute as the Bisons held onto the 27-24 lead after Lindsay Stergio tallied three additional points before the buzzer.
With Abington looking to break its four-game skid, the Lady Lions came out of the locker room storming as Vandiver opened the second half with a three-point bomb to equalize the scoreboard once again. Gallaudet responded with a trey by Alexa Justus followed by a jumper by Stergio, hoping to swing the momentum, but to no avail. The Lady Lions continued its push and eventually at the 12:48 mark, took over its second lead of the game with a layup from
Janay Winston.
From there, the lead began to widen to as much as 20 points as Winston's basket sparked a 15-2 run to go up 59-41 at the 4:33 mark as the Blue and White remained persistent throughout the second half for the eventual 66-48 victory. Not only was Abington able to create good looks throughout the second half, knocking down 16-for-26 (61.5 percent) of the shots from the field, but they were able to force 14 turnovers and crash the boards with 15 defensive rebounds as well.
Watson recorded seven assists and three steals, while Vandiver and Winston tallied nine and 17 points, respectively.
