Chambersburg, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team collected its fourth straight consecutive win with a 64-56 decision over Wilson College Tuesday night. Jessica Schmidt added another double-doubles to her collection, posting 10 points and 13 rebounds, while junior
Jaclyn Vandiver came up with two steals, two assists, and 17 rebounds for the Nittany Lions.
At first, you would see the box score in favor for Wilson, however Abington's 59.4 percent of free throws (19-for-32) showed to be the key factor in tonight's win. Both teams battled to get an edge and extend the lead as Abington jumped out to a 13-7 lead at the 14:21 mark, before Wilson's Vanessa Whitfield made back-to-back jumpers before Ashlee Yealy added a free throw as the Phoenix trailed by just one point with less than nine minutes remaining.
At the 7:41 mark, Vandiver nailed the basket from beyond the arc off a pass by Schmidt to spark a 19-2 run as the Nittany Lions extended the margin to a 21 point lead, the largest lead of the season, with the score showing 39-20 at the half.
At first glance, the second half may have shown the Nittany Lions extending the lead to 46-30 at the 16 minute mark, however Wilson managed to shift the momentum onto their side.
The Phoenix took advantage of Abington's missed shots and perfected their own baskets as Wilson fought their way back into the game as Tara Fields made the shot from the stripe, cutting the 16 point deficit to just three points in just a matter of ten minutes.
With less than two minutes remaining in the game and Wilson quickly on their heels, the Nittany Lions needed to act fast.
With the clock ticking down, Watson carefully protected the ball as the Wilson players intentionally fouled her three consecutive times, hoping to crash the boards on the missed free throws and convert them into points. Instead, Watson hit all five of the six shots from the charity stripe to add a seven point cushion for the Nittany Lions as they held on for the 64-56 victory as time expired.
Teharah Worrell posted a career-high five steals, adding 14 points on the night, while Watson went 14-for-18 at the stripe.
Vanessa Whitfield posted a double-doubles of 14 points and 14 rebounds for the Phoenix as fellow teammate Ashlee Yealy led the squad with 15 points on the night.
