Women’s Basketball Defeats Gallaudet 67-65 in Comeback Win

Box Score Abington, Pa. – After falling behind as many as 11 points, Penn State Abington's women's basketball team roared back with a come-back win, defeating NEAC opponent Gallaudet University, 67-65 this afternoon, at the Athletic Gymnasium.

The win snapped the four-game losing skid as Abington continues its hunt for the final playoff berth. After tying up the game three times in just three minutes into the opening tip-off, the Lady Lions trailed for nearly the entire game. At the 10:58 mark of the second half, the Lady Lions found themselves trailing by ten points, but after a 11-4 run and knocking down a trio of treys late in the second half, the Lady Lions found themselves on the winning side.

Abington improved to 9-13 overall and 7-8 in NEAC with the win, while the Bisons dropped to 5-7 (3-12 NEAC).

The Bisons shot lights out in the first half, shooting 50 percent from the field. After the layup by Lady Lion, Jaclyn Vandiver, the Bisons went on an 7-0 run before Vandiver stopped the run with a trey at the 13:55 mark as Abington trailed by four points. The Bisons continued its stampede late into the first half, as a pair of jumpers by Gallaudet's Claire Tucker held the Lady Lions at bay. Vandiver kept the Lady Lions within reach, scoring 14 first half points while grabbing nine rebounds and four steals. By the end of the half, Abington trailed by nine points.

In the second half, domination of the boards paved the way for the Lady Lion comeback. Being down only nine at the half, the Lady Lions found themselves down by 11 due to sloppy play and turnovers. Vandiver continued her dominance, and ended with a game high 25 points. The turning point for Abington came at the 7:37 mark, as the Lady Lions chiseled their way back into contention. It was a team effort as Janay Winston and Trish Watson scored double-digits in the final half.

Winston found Watson open up top and fed her the ball for a trey, cutting the deficit to three points. Gallaudet responded with a pair of baskets by Lindsay Stergio and Tucker to extend the Bison's lead to seven. Suddenly, the tables began to turn as the tandem of Watson and Winston went to work, taking advantage of the turnovers and rebounds and converting it to six additional points before the 5-foot-7 sophomore, Megan Onslager posted a jumper, giving Abington its first lead of the game at the 3:50 mark.

However, Abington suddenly learned that no lead is safe, as exactly thirty seconds later, Stergio made both free throws to give Gallaudet the lead once again. With just over two minutes to go, Abington and Gallaudet traded leads twice more before a free throw by Stergio tied up the game at 65 points apiece with 30 seconds remaining on the clock. Abington wisely burned out the final seconds before Vandiver tallied the game winning basket with five seconds remaining and held off Gallaudet's final attack for the 67-65 win.

Watson finished the day with 18 points, six assists, and five blocks, while Winston finished with 14 points and eight assists on the night.

Abington shot just 29.3 percent from the field in the first, before improving their range with 50 percent during the second stanza to finish the game with 39 percent from the field, compared to Gallaudet's 44.6 percent. Gallaudet allowed 24 turnovers in the game compared to Abington's 12, however the Bisons managed to collect 49 (11 offensive, 28 defensive) total rebounds to the Lady Lions' 35 (7 offensive, 28 defensive). Gallaudet went 7-for-10 (70 percent) from the charity stripe, while Abington had no free throw opportunities throughout the game.

The Lady Lions look to edge their way back into Conference contention as they travel to Lancaster Bible, Wednesday, Feb. 13. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
