Women's Basketball Ends Season With Loss to Harrisburg, 71-62

Box Score Middletown, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team closed out the 2012-13 season with a 71-62 loss to Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday afternoon.

Janay Winston posted a career-high 23 points, while senior guard Trish Watson scored 16 points, closing out her all-time career of 1,473 points in 95 games played. Jessica Schmidt came up with 10 rebounds on the day, while Jaclyn Vandiver tallied 12 points and seven rebounds for the Lady Lions.

Harrisburg jumped out of the gate with a 11-3 run in a span of four minutes before Abington was forced to call timeout to break the momentum at the 16:49 mark. Coming off the break, the momentum shifted as Abington surged its way into contention with a 10-3 run of its own to trail by one before Harrisburg called time with 12:38 left to play.

The momentum once again shifted in favor of Harrisburg after extending the lead to six, but Abington roared back with a basket by Winston followed by a 3-pointer by Watson to trail by one point with just over ten minutes remaining in the half.

Harrisburg closed out the half with a 19-10 run to extend the lead by as much as 15 points before Abington managed to score eight additional points, trailing 38-28 at the break.

The second half saw Abington with more energy and determination as the Lady Lions went to work, starting with back-to-back treys from Winston and Jaclyn Vandiver to spark a 12-6 run, cutting the deficit to just four points with 13:28 to play.

Harrisburg shifted its strategy, converting more opportunities off of rebounds to push ahead, leading by as much as 11 points throughout the half as Abington struggled to find the net in the final minutes for the eventual 72-60 loss.

Abington shot 33.8 percent (22-of-65) from the field and made 37.5 percent (6-of-16) of the shots from beyond the arc.  Harrisburg edged Abington, 41-40 at the boards and converted 10 second chance points.

With the loss, Abington completes the 2012-13 season with an overall record of 9-16 and 7-11 in conference play, while Harrisburg improves to 17-8 overall and 13-5 in the conference to qualify for postseason play.
