Women's Basketball Suffers Fourth Straight Loss

Box Score
Abington, Pa. – Keisha Robinson sped across the court off a fastbreak and scored a basket in the paint to break a 44-44 tie and the Penn State Berks women's basketball team went on a 11-2 run  for a 65-58 victory over Penn State Abington in NEAC action on Wednesday night at the Athletics Building.

Berks (8-12, 7-7) swept the season series and will hold the tiebreaker of Abington, should the teams finish with the same conference record. Abington falls to 8-13 overall and 6-8 in the conference, sitting in fifth spot.

Four players scored in double digits for the third consecutive game as senior guard Trish Watson led the squad with 16 points and five assists. Junior forwards Jaclyn Vandiver and Janay Winston both collect double-doubles as Vandiver posted 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Winston also posted 14 points and 13 rebounds on the night.

Both teams battled for possession throughout the first half, looking to convert on turnovers as Berks converted nine points compared to Abington's three. However, Abington's strong defense countered Berks offensive attacks, who led by as much as much as three points as Abington later tied up the game three times throughout the stanza. Vandiver fed a pass inside to sophomore guard Megan Onslager, who then tied up the game with a jumper with eight ticks on the board before the buzzer signaled the end of the half with the game tied at 20-20.

In a second half that saw eight lead changes throughout the stanza, Robinson's jumper was followed up by a free-throw before Brittney Mitchell nailed a 3-pointer off a pass by Kellie Wilson to spark a short run to break the deadlock at the 4:44 mark. Down by 11, Abington bounced back into the game with back-to-back baskets by junior forward Jaclyn Vandiver to cut the deficit to just three points with 13 seconds on the clock.

Abington quickly stopped the clock with an intentional foul on Berks' Wilson, who made one of the two free throw opportunities. Vandiver crashed the board and came up with the rebound on the second throw and drove the ball down the court, finding senior guard Trish Watson for a desperate three-pointer shot that clanged on the rim as time expired.

Both teams struggled to find the basket in the first half as Berks made 22.2 percent (8-for-36) of their shots from the field compared to Abington's 21.9 percent (7-for-32). Abington changed that around during the second half, shooting 16-for-40 (40 percent) and went 4-for-4 at the line.

Abington will return to action on Sunday, February 10th as the Lady Lion host Gallaudet University. Tip-off is slated for 12 p.m. With three games remaining, Abington will need to win all three games and hope for a Berks loss to remain in the playoff hunt.
